Shetland Times...
"
NORTHLINK’S service to Shetland will be disrupted again next year when either the Hjaltland or the Hrossey is taken out of service to cover the Pentland Firth.
The situation first occurred last month when the Hamnavoe, which sails the Scrabster to Stromness route, was taken into dry dock in Denmark.
In previous years the company has chartered a ship from Cal-Mac to deal with the problem, but the SIC’s network development manager, Ken Duerden said this week NorthLink’s most recent contract effectively gave it a get out clause.
Instead it was taking an Aberdeen to Lerwick ship to cover the shortfall.
Speaking to members of SIC transport partnership ZetTrans, Mr Duerden said: “NorthLink’s line is their contract allows them to do this, so we need to take this up with the government.
“The dry dock programme for this year is over, but they took a ship off the Aberdeen to Lerwick route to cover the Scrabster to Stromness route.” This year’s dry dock programme caused disruption for passengers for three weeks – one week for each of the NorthLink ships taken in for their regular overhaul.
Next year’s refits will take place in February and March."

PLANS for changes to Shetland’s inter island ferry fares have been shelved due to ever increasing fuel costs.
Shetland Islands Council’s ferries board is facing a shortfall of more than £1 million in its 2008/09 budget for marine diesel to run its 12 strong fleet.
