DAGGRI takes nostalgic voyage around the North Isles...

Due to its popularity last year, Shetland Amenity Trust and Shetland Islands Council are again joining forces to offer The ‘Earl’ Viking Tour on Sunday 29th June.
On board the M.V. Daggri, passengers will learn more about the Earl of Zetland through photos and video footage.  During the voyage, representatives from Shetland Amenity Trust and Scottish Natural Heritage will focus on the natural environment and cultural heritage of the North Isles, including archaeology, place names, wildlife and geology; while Lawrence Tulloch relays local tales and folklore.
Departing from the Yell Sound ferry terminals, the Daggri will steam up the east coast of Yell and onto Lund on the west of Unst.  From there, she will go around the south of Unst and via Sandwick to Baltasound, where passengers can enjoy soup and sandwiches on board before having the option to tour the Island of Unst.  Tours on offer will include the three Viking Unst longhouse excavations, Belmont House and the Unst Heritage Centre and Boat Haven.
Chris Dyer, SAT Assistant Archaeologist, explained more: “The unique opportunity to view a landscape from the sea is thought-provoking and enables a greater understanding of past settlement.
Once ashore, visitors will be able to see archaeologists from Copenhagen and Bradford excavating Viking longhouses at Belmont, Underhoull and Hamar. There will be tours of the sites with artefacts on display, and people will be able to learn more about this significant aspect of Shetland archaeology.”
After departing Baltasound, the Daggri will sail around the east coast of Fetlar before heading back to the Yell sound ferry terminals, where the tour ends.
Fiona Farquhar,
SIC Ferry Services Training & Customer Liaison Officer, commented: “We are delighted to be involved in this tour which helps raise the profile of the good work done by Shetland Amenity Trust in the North Isles.”

Official Press Realise:
Fuel Surcharges
"Orkney Ferries, in consultation with Orkney Islands Council, has set the level of fuel surcharge on ferry fares at 25p per journey on the South and Inner Isles ferries and 45p per journey on the Outer Isles ferries. These surcharges will come into effect on June 12 and will be subject to continual review. The charges will apply to all adult fares but no extra charge will be applied to junior passengers. The extra charge will also apply to motor vehicles but not to freight traffic. Passengers who have already purchased a book of tickets in advance will not be asked to pay the difference. Books of tickets at the amended prices are available now. The Full Council agreed on May 27 to apply surcharges in light of the soaring costs of fuel.
