SHETLAND ISLANDS COUNCIL:
A Killer Whale (Orca) has been captured on film aboard Shetland Islands
Council vessel Geira while n passage in the Bluemull Sound today.

PENTLAND FERRIES:
Pentalina left Cebu in the Philippines this morning on the first
part of her journey to the Orkney Islands. Her next stop will be
Singapore. Keep checking operators website for further updates.

 It is
estimated that it will take around four weeks to make the journey to the
UK. There are planned fuel stops at Singapore, Colombo in Sri Lanka, and
the port of Aden in The Yemen.
The vessel will then go through the Suez Canal through the Mediterranean
Sea and call in by Gibraltar before making the last leg direct to
Orkney.
Pentland Ferries owner Andrew Banks will be on the ferry as far as
Singapore before flying back to Orkney, and the boat will be skippered
on the journey by local man Willie Pottinger.
Open days are planned for the vessel in St Margaret's Hope and in Wick
before the boat starts in service.

Ferry trip with sting in tail …
A LIVE scorpion measuring approximately 3cms long was
discovered aboard the NorthLink ferry Hjaltland last Tuesday. The
ferry was berthed in Aberdeen when a stewardess cleaning one of the
cabins found the scorpion in bedlinen at around 8.30am.

Shetlands transport authority has joined forces with its Highland-based
equivalent to seek a 40 per cent reduction in ferry fares across
Scotland.

PENTLAND FERRIES:
Due to circumstances beyond the operators control there have been
several delays with the sailing of the new Pentalina from the
Philippines.
It is anticipated that she will be setting off for Orkney in the next
two weeks and will be arriving towards the end of August.

"MSP Launches Ferry Fares Petition"
Labour Highlands and Islands MSP David Stewart has launched a petition
calling for reduced ferry costs. Mr Stewart said “Last year, Labour
pledged that, if we were in government, we would immediately reduce
ferry fares for resident islanders by 40%. The SNP government has
refused to go along with this across the board approach. They are
introducing substantial new subsidies for those travelling on certain
routes, principally those to the Western Isles. Reduced fares on these
routes are being introduced when those travelling to other islands face
a hike in fares.” “Those living on the islands of Argyll and Bute,
together with the people of Orkney and Shetland are losing out unfairly.
That is why I’m using the summer months to campaign for a better deal
for all Scotland’s island communities.” The online petition can be
