NORTHLINK
FERRIES
For over 30 years, P&O Scottish Ferries operated ferry services
from the Scottish Mainland to Orkney and Shetland until December 2000, when
NorthLink Orkney & Shetland Ferries Ltd, a joint venture involving
Caledonian MacBrayne and The Royal Bank of Scotland, was appointed to take
over the service by the Scottish Executive. In July 2006 the contract
transferred to NorthLink Ferries Ltd, a new company wholly owned subsidiary
of previously dormant company David MacBrayne Ltd, whose sole shareholder is
Scottish Ministers. David MacBrayne Ltd now own NorthLink Ferries Ltd and
remains in the ownership of Scottish Ministers, as does Caledonian MacBrayne
Ltd.
Three passenger ferries were designed and built to the highest standards in
terms of both safety and comfort for the Northern Isles. The a la carte and
self service restaurants offer a wide range of menus featuring local
produce. Each vessel also provides spacious lounge areas, bars, children's
play areas and comfortable en-suite cabins. A modern cinema showing the
latest releases is available on there longer routes. |
